A Tortured Soul is one of the most aptly named bands in existence. Dark, oppressive lyrics with topics ranging from suicide to the loss of faith abound on Lucifer's Fate. Equally dark and crushingly heavy riffs are the musical hallmark of A Tortured Soul's third album. I had never heard of A Tortured Soul prior to Lucifer's Fate but I am damn glad I've heard of them now. The album kicks off in the most unusual fashion. The band puts their slowest, most musically subdued track, "Ritual," first. Sounding nothing like the rest of the album, "Ritual," nonetheless, is a powerful opener. Singer Rick Black is center stage singing about the end of wayward life. The tone is somber and the sound effect at the end of the song makes me jump out of my skin every time I hear it, even though I know it is coming. I get chills thinking about it. After "Ritual," Lucifer's Fate is all about pure, evil, kick-ass Heavy Metal. A Tortured Soul have a modern sound, akin to bands like Brainstorm and Witch King, but also elements of classic bands like Judas Priest and Mercyful Fate, thanks in large part to singer Rick Black's impressive voice. At times he employs a Rob Halford-like baritone and at others, insanely high King Diamond-esque screams. This guy can truly belt it out. On songs like "Ashes to Ashes" and "Dark Chapel," he lets fly with the full range. The rest of the band is equally talented and their performances are incredibly tight. The highlight of Lucifer's Fate has to be lead guitarist Nate Gorenc. There are a ton of lead guitar players, but very few are this guy's equal when it comes to "feel." Gorenc's solos are perfectly constructed for each song. He's not here to prove how fast he can play or how technical he is. He is here to add depth to the music and he does it well. I found myself replaying several songs, which are excellent on their own, just for the solos. Check out the solo on "Fallen" to see what I mean. I am mighty impressed with A Tortured Soul's Lucifer's Fate. There are no weak tracks to be found. It is a great listen from start to finish. Recommended. TRACKLIST: 1. Ritual 2. Lucifers Fate 3.
